Democracy Day: Federal Government Declares June 12 Public Holiday

The Federal Government has announced that Thursday, 12 June 2025, will be a public holiday to mark Democracy Day.

This was confirmed in a statement by the Ministry of Interior on Sunday in Abuja. The announcement came through the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who made the declaration on behalf of the government.

He used the moment to congratulate all Nigerians, saying the country has now seen 26 straight years of civilian government. No military takeovers. No interruptions.

According to him, 12 June stands for more than a date. It’s a reminder of the fight for justice, the pursuit of truth, and a promise that peace and hope still have a place in Nigeria.

“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign, and peace is sustained, and our future assured,” he said.

He added that the road hasn’t been smooth, but Nigerians have shown strength and grit through it all.

Dr Tunji-Ojo also stressed that democracy works best when it leaves room for change and growth. He said President Bola Tinubu’s government remains focused on keeping the people’s voice at the centre of how the country is run—politically, socially, and economically.
