Gunmen on Friday killed two passengers on Fugar–Agenebode Road, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.
The gunmen also abducted 14 commuters after blocking the road with sporadic gunshots.
However, the abducted passengers were rescued by the police.
According to a statement by the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu, a combined team of police operatives from Agenebode, local vigilantes, and hunters responded swiftly and pursued the attackers into the forest.
He said a gun duel ensued between the police and the gunmen along Obe Hill by the pipeline to Ajaokuta.
Yamu said the abducted 14 passengers were rescued alive after the exchange of gunshots.
“However, a 12-year-old girl was fatally shot by the fleeing kidnappers, and one female victim remains unaccounted for,” he said.
